Around here, we Dream Big on most Sundays. It started as a letter to our email list and it's still that — a note from Kim about what we've been making, what we've been looking at, and whatever the week handed us. We keep them all in one place, so nobody misses one: read every Dream Big Sunday letter here.
Dear Cowgirls and Cowboys,
I love a full moon. I always have.
When I was little, every once in a while my Dad would scoop me up in his arms and tell me he had a surprise.
Then we'd sneak outside together.
I can still remember wondering what we were going to see — and then he'd point up at the sky.
The full moon.
That was the surprise.
He made it seem like the most extraordinary thing in the world. Something worth stopping whatever you were doing to go outside and see. And because my Dad thought it was a big deal, I did too.
I still do.
My Dad was one of the people who taught me to dream big, long before I ever called it that.
Not through big speeches about following your dreams. It was more in the way he lived. Take good care of the animals that depend on you. Stay positive when things get hard. Figure things out. Keep going.
I like to think of him as a cowboy in spirit.
In his world, there was always a way. Nothing was impossible.
So when I learned the Harvest Moon was coming this weekend, my first thought wasn't about the harvest. It was about my Dad, and those little nighttime adventures, and how something so simple can stay with you for the rest of your life.
The Harvest Moon got its name because it gave farmers a little extra evening light at the end of the growing season, when there was still work to finish.
Dreams have seasons like that. Seasons for planting. Seasons when you're working away and nobody else can see much happening. And every once in a while, a season when you look at what you've grown and realize it might finally be time to bring it in.
Maybe there's something you've been working toward that's closer than you think. Maybe there's something you've been calling impossible that deserves another look.
I know what my Dad would have said.
Keep going.
Take care of what matters. Stay positive. And don't be too quick to decide something is impossible.
The moon will still be nearly full tonight. Step outside and look up.
Dream Big,
Kim
